Well not quite, but I did get your attention huh ?
Winter is a unique time for ponds and water features. If you have koi or other types of fish in your pond they are possibly cruising around and just taking it easy in this cold weather. As water temps go down so does the activity levels of fish in most ponds unless you reside in some of your more warmer regions of the country or world where the temps do not dip below 40 degrees. The bacteria that is inside the pond water is not as active as when the water is colder. There are various types of bacteria and other types of pond additives that make the living environment safe, clean, and useable as the winter months seem to drag along. The increase of day light hours also increase the amounts of certain algae to the pond. Most notable and unsightly is string algae. The levels of bacterial that would otherwise reduce the amounts of nutrients in the water is lower during the winter so, there are certain bacteria that work best during the colder months so to help reduce the amounts of nutrients in the water that would help the string algae to thrive. Understanding the habits of your fish and the requirements for bacteria and other beneficial nutrients for your water feature will provide you with happy winter days instead of frustration to add to the grey over cast skies. Take some time out to go to my buddy Eric's web site at www.theponddigger.com to learn more about how to keep your fish healthy and your water features clean and fresh through out the year.
